Friendly Competition

Vera Ralya School in Haslett, Michigan recently challenged other young anglers to try to beat their school record for the most students fishing in a three day period. They had 375 students show up for this community event!

Zemmer Jr. High and Hahn Middle school in Lapeer and neighboring Davidson, Michigan, also hosted a friendly competition between schools to get their students to rally their families to wake up early on a Saturday and get outside for some fresh air (and water, apparently it rained!)... They have started an annual spring tournament that their students will surely look forward to each spring. Will Lapeer wind back the trophy next year???

Have you used friendly competition to spark interest in your anglers and get them to share their new interest with more students??? Tell us your story.

The Voice of Experience

What advice would you give to new schools starting a fishing club next year?

As you probably know, F3 recently learned that they did not receive funding for the 2009/2010 Physh Ed program. Although we are presently applying for funding from other organizations, we are trying to give advice to the schools that applied for grants. Help us help them start a small program by giving suggestions on finding local donors/sponsors, starting a fishing club, getting local training, and any other advice you think that might help.

Planning for Success

What resources do you use when planning your lessons? Do you use the resources the Foundation sent you in the fall? (The Sportfishing Handbook, Future Fisherman DVD, Aquatic Resouces Education Curriculum)? Do you use the lesson plans your group developed last summer at the teachers workshop?Let us know what resources you use the most and why!

Show Me the Money!

Several Physh Ed Teachers have shared their GOOD NEWS about receiving additional grants that have helped offset the cost of taking students on fishing trips or purchasing more equipment. Joel Slawinski from Melbourne High School in Florida had luck with Target.... Tell us about the grants you have received and include the name of the organization awarding the grant to your school.

Hey it's cold outside-how about ICE FISHING?

I have received many nice photos from Physh Ed Schools bringing their students out on the ice. Share your stories on how to get started, what equipment is necessary, which vendors offer good pricing, what are the safety considerations, and any other information that would be helpful to schools considering ice fishing. Check out this You Tube video submitted by Dave Hagengruber to get motivated to get out on the ice!
