Starting/Expanding your Youth Fly Fishing Program?

I have just learned that the Federation of Fly Fishers has been gifted with fly rod/reel/line sets to donate to educational programs teaching youth angling. Each school can receive a maximum of 5 sets. First come, first serve!

If you are incorporating FLY FISHING in your Physh Ed program, you are eligible to respond to this offer by contacting Matt Wilhelm at educate@fedflyfishers.org.

I would love to share what we are doing in fly fishing.. we have been going the past 2 fridays to fish and it is awesome.. Students have learned the basic cast, how to shoot the line and the roll cast..
We had a person from Orvis come out and guest speak!
We have have reporters both times come out to see what we are doing.
I would love to expand the fly fishing part of my program!

Take Care! Barnanne

We are all set up in April with a local fly fishing group to come in and give an intro. with hands on and do some fly tying, and hopefully one more day fishing. We are real excited about this opportunity. Must of missed the rod opportunity as the page was expired when I tried it.Maybe we'll get lucky next time. So who got lucky!

My kids would love to have some fly fishing outfits. We have some fly fishing equipment ordered but it hasn't come yet. We cannot wait to get out and start practicing. We plan to use the equipment yet this fall if it comes quick enough.

I would love to incorporate a fly fishing program into our school program. We have casting ponds in Golden Gate Park that are available to us. Doubt many cities have designated man-made pools for fly fishing!

I have many volunteers that would like to help with fly fishing. This would be a great way to help stretch our grant money. Count me in.

I would really like to expand my fly fishing program. The kids liked the idea of fly fishing and it would be great to receive from free gear. I tried to email matt at educate@flyfishers.org but it would not go through so here is my email. tgossard@kpbsd.k12.ak.us

I have purchased my spincasting combos, but have been holding out on the fly rods. I see all of my students for 4 years. I am planning on spincasting this year, and branching into fly casting next year. By the time they are done in my elementary school they will ahve experience spincasting, fly casting, lure making (hopefully fly tying) and maybe even ice fishing, if my district will let me. Our kids will be very well rounded as the move ino their secondary education. 5 fly rods would really help our cause. Good ideas from everyone else, thanks!!!

alaska tommy, if you want your mail to go through, you need to wait until spring when it is light enough for the pigeon to carry it south.
I can picture it in my mind. You have thrown another log on the fire. The cabin has that warm golden glow from the candle at your desk. There you sit, thread in hand, fly tying vise in place, Hackle, yarn and hooks close at hand.
Hey, are there any more job opennings up there?

Do you really want to be walking around up in the cold of Alaska??? Michigan gets cold enough but Alaska? Could be some good ice fishing though I bet!

I really like your progression you are thinking about. I am planning on something to same way with starting spincastin in 7th grade, and then moving into fly casting in 8th grade. Great minds think alike right?

I have been teaching fishing and top water kayaking in my physical education program for 5 years now. This grant program provided the seed money for initial equipment purchases but I have written several more grants for continued equipment purchases. I am up to 100 spinrods, 15 top water kayaks, and 10 fly rods, 15 fly vices, and a great selection of tackle boxes and goodies. Keep writing those grants and get more equipment for your programs.

Deb-
Any hints as to what grant you have applied for and received? Thanks!

Vance Holmes said...

Steve,
You are right, Michigan makes me pretty happy. I walk to school during the winter and often carry snowshoes with me as it is. I would not want to face a lake that was several feet deep with ice with only a ice spud in hand.
On top of that, I've heard that the DNR up in Alaska, requires you to have a federal duck stamp, and a plug in your shotgun to take down the "skeeters" that grow up there in the tundra.
I guess I'll stay in Michigan, but Alaska is a nice dream.

Try these grants...I just received the ING Unsung Hereos Grant for $2000.00 Apply for next year 2009-2010

Goody's Good Deeds Grant - Due Nov 1

Pay it Forward Grant - $500.00 but I just received that one for cleaning up rivers and lakes we fish on....

I'll keep sending ideas

I am going to tie flies and fly fish with my 8th graders and spin cast with my 6th and 7th graders. I tried to contact Matt Wilhelm at educate@flyfishers.org and it kept coming back as not deliverable.

Have any of you gotten through?

Thanks,

Maggie Kirkham
still pregnant in Cody Wyoming.

Maggie,
I guess I somehow posted under the wrong heading, so I'll try again.
I e-mailed Matt the first morning it was posted, somewhere around 7 am. ( I guess that would make it about 5 am your time.-Hey you get to sleep longer out there in the west.) I haven't heard anything back one way or another. (God, wouldn't that be a poke in the eye if mine didn't go through either after I gave Alaska Tommy such a hard time about it.)
Anyway, the best to you and your family!

Hey gang, Teresa posted the wrong e-mail for Matt. It should be educate@fedflyfishers.org
Teresa wants you to know the correct e-mail address so you can contact Matt. She would post the correction herself but she is out of the office. I hope this helps everyone. Have a good weekend.
Remember Matt needs your mail to put you on the list for fly rods.

ALSO MATT IS AVAILABLE AT iffc2@fedflyfishers.org
He is very responsive (often out of the office teaching, but very good at getting back to you).
I so enjoy reading all of your posts! YOU are making a dramatic impact on the lives of your students AND the health of fishing in this country. YOUR efforts through your students will create (already has) a strong conservation ethic and love of the outdoors that will surely last a lifetime. My very best regards to you all!

Here is some more information on the fly rods. Matt e-mailed me late Friday afternoon. (Too bad I was gone and the computer was shut down until this morning.)
Matt sends a message and 2 attachments. One attachment is an application to get the rods. It needs to be filled out and returned to him. The rods will be given out first come first serve based on the applications being returned to him, filled out. (Maybe a lot of you are ahead of me there.)
The second attachment is a form that needs to be filled out and turned in each time the rods are used, so that the people we got them from knows that the rods have been put to good use.
You may have a better computer than I do, mine would not type on the forms that Matt sent me. I found that if I saved them as a Word doc. I could then type in the blanks provided.
Good luck, get typing.

My community memmber that have seen us out casting a line, really loved the idea! They even want me to do some stuff with ice fishing up here (any more $$ hiding somewhere Anne and Teresa?????). Something that I am thinking about! Great job!

Hi Gang!
I am back in the office after attending the Aquatic Resources Education Association (AREA)bi annual conference in Texas. I will add a post with information on this group later today, but first wanted to apologize for putting the incorrect email address up for the free rods. I emailed Vance-the-super-blogger to let you know and I think all of you have been in touch with Matt at this point, but I will fix the original post today. I took you on a e-scavenger hunt I guess. For the future, just so you all know, all of the contact information for any of the instructors that were at the summer training workshop are in your PHYSH ED HOLY GRAIL OF A BINDER...section I.:)

How do we know if we are one of the schools to receive the fly equipment? If we are getting the equipment, how long before it will arrive at our school? Does anyone know the answers to those questions?

Steve Walsh said...

Matt emailed me and told me that we were getting it. I had actually know for a couple weeks (long story). He told me to expect them in late October, and then today I received a package with the 5 combos! They look great and I know I will get a great use of of them. Thanks Matt!

I thought the address Teresa gave us was his website. Once I found out it was his e-mail address I was able to contact him. Once I filled out the forms and sent them back to him he said I was in. Steve if you just received them, then we will probably be getting them any day now. Nice to know...thanks for the heads up.We met with 50 students who are interested in putting together a fishing club today. Illinois is having their first high school state bass fishing tournament in the spring. We are going to enter it...anyone have any ideas on organizing and a selection process as to who we enter into this competition? We were thinking about taking all in the club once we establish it on a lake to give all of them a feel for a competitive bass tournament setting and see who does what in helping to determine who we should enter. This is totally at the infant stage and will be fun getting this together. Very cool the state decided to begin this as a competitive sport.

Steve Walsh said...

Pam-
Sounds like you have some real excitement down there. I made contact with the local Bass Club and they told me about the Bass Tournament in Wisconsin as well. I am thinking about publicizing this for the kids, but then don't know how to handle it. My fishing unit is taking place in the fall, and the tournament is not till spring so that throws a monkey wrench into things. Still working on it though. Good luch with the Fishing Club formation. Make sure you keep us updated on that. I would like to start something like that but right now, I think that participation might be a little low. We will have to see!

I have been in touch with Matt about the fly rods - thanks for the heads up F3! We are nearly done with our spin casting unit (written test and field trip next week!). When I mentioned a fly fishing unit in the spring, the students eyes lit up. I think this will be a great opportunity for them. We have lots of nice trout stream in NE Iowa with our Karst topography and all that fun stuff :)

We teach fly casting & fly tying to 5th graders. First we introduce casting in PE class, then interested students sign up for an after school program & trout fishing trip. We use lots of parents & volunteers. We send notices home with the students to recruit parents & it works very well. For fly tying we try to have one adult with each student. There is nothing more satisfying than having a kid catch a fish on a fly that he/she tied.

I just received the fly fishing outfits from Matt. If you haven't gotten yours' yet, they are really nice. A case for the rods and a case for the reels. (The rods are all together in one case. The reels are all together in one case)
I hope to have the kids put them to use yet this fall if the weather cooperates. Hey, it is 72 degrees here in Michigan today.
Thanks Matt! And yes, I'll drop the folks that gave them to us a letter too.

I recieved my set of fly fishing gear also. It is a very nice set. i am working on the kids writing a thank you note for them.
it is 20 degrees here in Alaska with a nice bunch of new snow on the ground.
