I attended a Trout in the Classroom presentation given by Rochelle Gandour, the National Youth Education Coordinator for TIC. I learned a lot about this program and am excited to share this with those of you that may have considered adding this to your program. Rochelle has offered to help connect you with your state and local Trout Unlimited Chapter so that you can meet and determine if you can meet the criteria for this program which includes:
**An aquarium set up to provide cold, clean, fresh water.
**A state approved source of eggs
**A state approved field study and release site in a coldwater stream havitat
**A year-long commitment to care for the trout as they grow.
Need more info? Contact Rochelle at rgandour@tu.org
She might even give you the words to her song "Once I was a Baby Trout" which she taught to all of the conference attendees! TIC website is located at www.troutintheclassroom.org
Do you live in an area that is too warm for Trout??? I also learned that there are several other programs that hatch other spieces of fish in the classroom including PADDLEFISH-that was in Louisianna. Contact your State Fish and Wildlife agency for more information!

I was going to hatch trout when I first started researching this activity. I found that there was more support available in my state for salmon at this time. I hatch Salmon in my Classroom coordinated by the Michigan DNR but I understand that they are limiting the number of participants. I just received my eggs-246. The whole school buzzes with "The eggs are here, the eggs are here". This is such a great opportunity for kids. I've said this several times. The kids don't just develop the satisfaction of doing something for nature but their minds and hearts become aware of the role they play in the world around them. This is one of my top 5 best all around lessons that I do in my classroom but the lessons do so much more than you can every expect to imprint on your young students souls. I love what these eggs teach my kids!
Good for you tammi! You are right, it isn't the details they remember, it is the attitude they develop, that counts over the life time of our students.
I just wrote a grant to get the equipment for trout in the classroom. The state of New Jersey has a an outstanding program. I am working in conjunction with our 7th grade science program. The Phsyh Ed program has really livened our our school. I have been asked to talk to the enitre district about my grant and the program
I have another website for Michigan teachers who are interested in learning more about salmon in the classroom.
